creative practice & research solutions
Slow Things is grounded on producing technologically-embedded creative work, with a focus on meaning and reflection. I believe there are alternative ways in which we can live with technology: beyond noise, an ever-saturating attention economy and its consequences–a soulless, unbridled competition for everything. Together, we can transform slow ideas into reality.
Through this philosophy, Slow Things delivers solutions in the form of various digital and physical products, such as websites, digital apps, electronic hardware, multi-scale interactive installations, creative research writing and education.
Past engagements and consultations include these sectors: advertising/experiential, wellbeing/health, GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives and museums), and education. Please refer to Work samples.
By choosing to work with Slow Things, you are not hiring separate 'design' or 'technologist' teams. Instead, you get a single end-to-end service scoped to your requirements.
My creative and technological services include:
Are you keen to connect an idea to the discovery of what's possible? Do you have an urge to 'solve' an issue, but need a helping hand to get started on the work? Is engagement through creativity important for you, to widen your understanding of your project?
Ideation research helps you navigate this journey, covering the initial spark through to discovery, understanding your audience, experimenting with plausible and feasible concepts as outcomes.
The transdisciplinary practice of Slow Things also understands that creative work needs to meet very real-world requirements of production scope and timeline projections. This means less time and effort wasted negotiating scope.
Interaction Design (IxD) is about understanding and applying a wider User Experience (UX) vision through designing good, effective interfaces for communication.
IxD extends beyond 'traditional' notions of screen-based apps–a common misunderstanding of the term! Designing interactions apply equally to embedded devices in tangible product design, alongside digital applications, online media, and site-specific, larger-scale interactive installations. Each genre has its own challenges; Slow Things can help you get there through a 'full-stack', holistic approach in a hybrid design AND technology practice.
Slow Things can also help you traverse how a 'big picture' brief can be distilled interactively, applying tried-and-tested approaches and an anticipatory view of compatible technologies to work out the varieties and intricacies of interaction design suitable for your project.
When it comes to designing interactions, knowing what can be done, and how it might be done, maximises your creative potential for your project. This is becoming increasingly important, as the bridges between digital services and tangible products get stronger and commonplace–not to mention the growth of agentic AI that is transforming how designers and developers create.
What sensors, software, devices, displays, or actuators do you need to make your idea work? How are you going to integrate it all? Digital technologies and emerging modes of technical production is a constantly changing and challenging landscape to navigate, especially if all you want is for a creative idea to 'just work'. Whether it's just you, or if you have to communicate with an engineering partner and require creative-technologist translation work, Slow Things is here to assist.
From evaluation, prototyping, through to production, Slow Things can also help scope and provide a solid foundation for your development needs. What you get is clarity and confidence in knowing the technologies used are appropriately specified, robust and compatible with your project. This extends to technical consultation services.
With two decades of tertiary creative media and technology education experience, Slow Things remains connected to the education space, focussing on developing community workshops to make creative technological education and literacy engaging, meaningful and accessible.
